Entry Description
I-69 Section 4 Contract Trumpeted in Monroe County
Local Firm to Build ‘Trumpet’ Interchange Connecting with S.R. 37
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A local firm will connect the State Road 37 corridor with the new Interstate 69 alignment at a “trumpet” interchange south of Bloomington. Crider & Crider Inc. of Bloomington submitted a $29 million bid that was the lowest among eight companies and 10 percent below the engineer’s cost estimate.
When completed, the trumpet interchange design will allow I-69 and S.R. 37 traffic to merge and diverge at higher speeds, while maintaining entrance and exit ramp access in all directions.
Only one construction contract in Greene County remains to be awarded for the new highway alignment of I-69 Section 4 between Naval Support Activity Crane and Bloomington, and contractor bids are scheduled to be opened in December.
The new Interstate 69 between Evansville and Indianapolis is widely regarded as a key component to the future economic vitality of southwestern Indiana, and will connect an entire region with improved access to jobs, education and healthcare. The 142-mile I-69 corridor was divided into six independent sections with the Tier 1 Final Environmental Impact Study, which was approved by the Federal Highway Administration in March 2004.
Governor Mitch Daniels accelerated the I-69 schedule with his Major Moves highway program, and I-69 in Indiana is the nation’s longest contiguous new interstate project currently under construction. The first 67 miles between Evansville and Naval Support Activity Crane are ahead of schedule to open by the end of this year.
