Entry Description
Organization Day, upcoming session
Organization Day was festive with 25 new members, their families and special guests on Tuesday. It was a great kick off for the upcoming session as we look to continue to put Indiana ahead of other states in job creation, graduation rates and financial security.
Most of Indiana’s congressional delegation was in attendance for Organization Day, seeing the members of the House of Representatives sworn in and hearing the Speaker’s speech on the direction of the state. It was great to have U.S. Representatives Brooks, Bucshon, Carson, Messer, Stutzman, Walorski and Young in attendance. We have a great class of leaders in Washington DC that truly represent Hoosier values.
I am especially proud of Messer, Stutzman and Walorski who I served with in the House of Representatives. And for us locally, I am extremely excited for the 5th district to be represented by Hamilton County’s own Susan Brooks. They know they have a huge challenge in front of them, but I am confident Indiana will be proud of their work in D.C.
Traditionally, it is the Speaker’s day to also be sworn in and share his goals and expectations for the upcoming session. Speaker Bosma set the tone for the next session highlighting the importance of bipartisanship and working across the aisle to make sure every opinion is heard on the issues that matter most to Hoosiers. We will collaborate throughout the legislative process as we work to balance the budget and get Hoosiers back to work. Focusing on economic development and our fiscal security will top our list for this session.
These are the issues that we will continue to focus on this legislative session which starts on Jan. 7. We have a great leadership team at the helm. A lot of focus will be on Rep. Tim Brown and the Ways and Means committee as they work with members of the Senate like Sen. Kenley to construct an honestly balanced budget. This is the most important function of our duty as legislators to pass a balanced budget that strengthens Indiana’s position as the envy of the Midwest.
In mid-December, all House and Senate members have a deadline to have bills submitted and begin the drafting process. If you have any suggestions or ideas for the upcoming session, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone at 317-232-9620 or via email at h29@in.gov.
I hope by now you have survived the last bits of the leftovers from Thanksgiving dinner and the Black Friday sales which now seem to start on Thursday. It is a great time of year – enjoy it with your friends and families. Lastly, as you are doing your Christmas shopping, I encourage you to shop in our community first! We are blessed with great businesses that count on and need your support. It is these small businesses that are the foundation for our community!
