[s11] Sen. Zakas: General Assembly Begins 2013 Budget Session

Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (Nov. 20, 2012) — State Sen. Joe Zakas (R-Granger) gathered with fellow legislators today at the Statehouse for Organization Day — the start of the 118th Indiana General Assembly’s budget session.

Organization Day is marked by the swearing in of new General Assembly members as well as the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers. This day also provides each House and Senate caucus with the opportunity to organize before session officially begins on Jan. 7.

The 2013 session is a budget year, meaning lawmakers will draft a comprehensive proposal to fund government services for the next two years. By law, the 2013 legislative session must be completed no later than April 29.

“Today legislators met at the Statehouse to officially begin the 118th Session of the Indiana General Assembly — most important, a two-year state budget must be passed, and it must be balanced,” Zakas said. “This is a tough undertaking given our ongoing, weak national economy. Also the implementation of Obamacare will cost the state millions. Besides passing a balanced budget, legislators will face many other challenges as well, such as improving Child Protection Services in Indiana.”

Zakas also noted that much of the legislative work is done in committees, which will begin meeting early next year. He has been appointed as chairman of the newly formed Senate Committee on Civil Law and will serve as a member of the following committees in 2013 and 2014:

•    Corrections and Criminal Law
      o    Corrections Subcommittee, chairman
•    Elections
•    Judiciary
•    Public Policy

As the 2013 session gets under way, Zakas encourages Senate District 11 residents to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Zakas can be reached via email at or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
