[s7] Sen. Hershman: General Assembly Kicks Off 2013 Budget Session

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Nov. 20, 2012) — State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Buck Creek) gathered with fellow legislators today at the Statehouse for Organization Day — the ceremonial start of the 118th Indiana General Assembly’s budget session.

Organization Day is marked by the swearing in of new General Assembly members as well as the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers. This day also provides each House and Senate caucus with the opportunity to organize before session officially begins on Jan. 7.

The 2013 session is a budget year, meaning lawmakers will draft a comprehensive proposal to fund government services for the next two years. Hershman will play an integral role in that process, as he’s a member of the State Budget Committee and has again been appointed chairman of the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy. By law, the 2013 legislative session must be completed no later than April 29.

“Indiana has become synonymous with fiscal responsibility, and I look forward to further improving that track record,” Hershman said. “We’ve had to make tough budget decisions while facing numerous economic challenges throughout the past few years, but we’ve fared better than most states. We must prioritize creating a fifth-consecutive balanced budget, living within our means and keeping taxes low. All of these initiatives encourage employer growth and can help put Hoosiers back to work.”

Hershman said his Senate priorities for the 2013 session include:

• Building on Indiana’s low-tax, job-friendly environment
• Continuing fiscal responsibility
• Improving education by giving educators more needed resources and promoting college and vocational training
• Responding to Obamacare

In addition to his reappointment as Tax and Fiscal Policy chairman, Hershman will chair the Senate Committee on Joint Rules. He will also serve as a member of the following committees in 2013 and 2014:

• Appropriations
• Rules and Legislative Procedure

As the 2013 session gets under way, Hershman encourages Senate District 7 residents to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Hershman can be reached via email at Senator.Hershman@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
