[s31] Sen. Merritt, State Leaders to Host Public Forum on Addressing Abandoned Homes in Gary
Start Date: 10/25/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 10/25/2013
Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (Oct. 25, 2013) — State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis), the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) and other state leaders will be holding a public forum in Gary on Monday to address blighted, vacant and abandoned homes.

Who: Sen. Jim Merritt, Office of the Lt. Gov., the IHCDA, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson (D-Gary), State Sen. Earline Rogers (D-Gary)
What: Public forum to address abandoned homes in Indiana
When: Monday, Oct. 28, 6 p.m. CT
Where: YWCA of Northwest Indiana, 150 West 15th Avenue, Gary, Ind.

The public forum will focus on a new IHCDA program that could provide Indiana municipalities with funds to demolish blighted and abandoned homes. If approved by the U.S. Department of Treasury, the initiative will be funded through a portion of Indiana’s federal Hardest Hit Fund dollars. The proposed partnership between IHCDA and Indiana municipalities would allow communities to demolish blighted properties, and offer a variety of end-uses for the newly cleared properties, including green space and redevelopment.

“Abandoned homes affect all areas of this state, urban and rural alike. They attract crime, reduce property values and stifle community growth,” said Merritt, who’s worked on several pieces of legislation in recent years related to abandoned homes. “My goal on Monday is to get valuable feedback from Gary residents about their experiences with abandoned homes, and how this newly proposed project could help them.”

Additional meetings will be held throughout the state in the coming months to ensure all Hoosier residents have the opportunity to offer their thoughts and opinions. Potential locations include South Bend, New Albany, Muncie, Shelbyville and Fort Wayne. Stay tuned for further announcements about these visits. For those unable to attend the public hearings, please submit written comments to feedback@ihcda.in.gov by Monday, Dec. 2.
