Entry Description

LaPorte County-An early morning pursuit ended with a motorcycle crash and the driver receiving life threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police Detective Chris Campione revealed that at approximately 1:19 a.m., the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department received information about a motorcycle crash that may have occurred on U.S. 421 and 250 South in Westville. Officers who responded were unable to locate the crash but shortly thereafter heard a motorcycle approaching their location. A deputy clocked a 2002 Harley Davidson Street Glide at an excessive speed on US 421 (in a well posted 55 M.P.H. zone) from State Road 2. The deputy attempted to stop the motorcycle but the driver would not pull over.

The motorcycle went into a neighborhood off East Jefferson Street in Westville and continued until exiting back onto north bound US 421. The motorcycle driver later identified as William Knies, 39 of Westville, refused to stop as he continued north.

As Knies approached US 421 (Franklin Street) and Valentine Court in Michigan City (this is approximately two blocks south of Ames Field) Knies lost control of the Harley when it hit a curb. Knies was ejected off the motorcycle and landed in the roadway. The Harley came to rest in the right lane on its side.

Knies who was not wearing a helmet was transported to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City and later transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital with life threatening injuries. Preliminary indications are Knies tested positive for alcohol (.28 B.A.C %) and also metabolic of tetrahydrocannibinol (THC).

Questions about the pursuit should be directed to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department.
