Governor Pence Celebrates Final Stretch of Hoosier Heartland Opening to Traffic

LOGANSPORT, Ind. – Today Indiana Governor Mike Pence joined federal, state, and local leaders to commemorate the opening of the final stretch of the new State Road 25 Hoosier Heartland, between Logansport and Delphi. Hundreds of people celebrated the new highway during a ribbon-cutting at the Logansport Ivy Tech Community College campus and a luncheon at the Logansport-Cass County Airport.

“Roads mean jobs, and the Hoosier Heartland aims to drive that point home for the people living right here,” said Governor Pence. “The Hoosier Heartland will serve as an economic tool, connecting this region like never before and upgrading the safety and efficiency of this road.”

"The Hoosier Heartland Corridor will provide north-central Indiana and Logansport with the ability to attract additional businesses, industries, and jobs. This highway corridor enhances the competitiveness of north-central Indiana by giving our region of the state the ability to conduct business over a limited access highway," Logansport Mayor Ted Franklin said. "Logansport is now connected to the world, and we plan on using that connection to build a better future for the city.”

The new Hoosier Heartland is a 35-mile, four lane, limited access divided highway connecting Lafayette to Logansport, where it links to the previously upgraded U.S. 24 also known Fort to Port corridor because it connects with Fort Wayne and Toledo, Ohio.

“The new State Road 25 will greatly benefit the people of Cass, Carroll and White County. But this highway doesn’t simply connect a region, it connects the state,” said Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) LaPorte District Deputy Commissioner Bob Alderman. “Now travelling between Lafayette and Fort Wayne is easier and safer than ever before.”

INDOT and the Hoosier Heartland Industrial Corridor, Inc. (HHIC) organized the celebration for this $334 million project. The HHIC is one of the oldest cross county economic development groups in Indiana. Since the early 1980s, the bi-partisan coalition has promoted the construction of a four-lane, limited access highway to connect the Wabash Valley to the regional and national economy.

“As we look back on the efforts that were begun by former Governor Otis Bowen to link the Wabash Valley, we have come to realize how important the Hoosier Heartland Highway is to sustaining the growth and viability of the communities of this region,” HHIC Spokesperson Garry Petersen said. “We build highways not for today, but for our children’s children. With the highway's completion, traveling the Wabash Valley will simply be safer for future generations of Hoosiers."

This final stretch of the new State Road 25 Hoosier Heartland opened to traffic between Logansport and Delphi this past Friday, October 18. Traffic has been flowing on the new State Road 25 between Delphi and Lafayette since its opening nearly one year ago, on October 24, 2012.

Ground was broken for the Hoosier Heartland Major Moves project in October of 2008. Work was accelerated to be completed by the end of 2013.
