[ISP] Northern Indiana Men Arrested on Drug Charges in Miami County
Start Date: 10/20/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 10/20/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

Peru – Yesterday evening, a traffic stop by Indiana State Trooper Luke Bowyer led to the arrests of Sepoor A. Washington, 29, Elkhart, IN, and Benjamin J. Hicks, 33, South Bend, IN. Both men were incarcerated in the Miami County Jail. Hicks faces felony charges for possession of heroin and possession of a legend drug. Both men face a misdemeanor charge for possession of marijuana under 30 grams.

Yesterday evening at approximately 4:25 p.m., Indiana State Trooper Luke Bowyer initiated a traffic stop on a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice which was traveling on U.S. 31 near Airport Road in Miami County. Bowyer stopped the Chevrolet because the driver, identified as Washington, was allegedly following another vehicle too closely. During the course of the traffic stop, Bowyer noticed indicators that criminal activity might be afoot and requested a narcotics detecting police dog. Trooper Daniel Prus and his narcotics detecting police dog, Zeke, arrived to assist.

Prus deployed Zeke to conduct a free air sniff around the Chevrolet. Zeke gave a positive alert to the odor of illegal narcotics inside the vehicle. During a subsequent search of the Chevrolet and its occupants, officers allegedly found marijuana, heroin, and a legend drug (pills).

Citizens are encouraged to call their local law enforcement agencies with any information about the possession, distribution, or manufacturing of illegal narcotics. Information can also be reported anonymously by calling the Indiana State Police Methamphetamine Tip Line at 1-800-453-4756.
