[DNR] Some facilities to open at new Trine SRA
Start Date: 10/11/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 10/11/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description
The public gets its first glance at the new Trine State Recreation Area starting Nov. 2.

Operating hours will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until the property is completed early next year. At that time, extended hours will become permanent.

DNR staff will be stationed throughout Trine SRA on Nov. 2 and 3 during operating hours to answer questions, explain the property’s features and offer tours of some of the main facilities.

During the first weekend, guests can visit the welcome center and picnic shelter; use the new 2.5-mile, multi-purpose Rolling Oaks Trail; explore the half-mile, hard-surface bike trail; fish Gentian Lake; visit Swenson Lodge, which is available for rent for group functions; and peek into one of the 12 cabins available in 2014. All of those facilities, except the cabins, will stay open after Nov. 2-3.

Until further notice, fishing on Gentian Lake will be allowed only from the handicap-accessible pier. To fish, anglers must register at the welcome center to receive a property fishing permit and learn about special guidelines.

“We still have a lot of work to do, but we would like people to start to enjoy the area as work continues,” Pokagon State Park and Trine SRA property manager Ted Bohman said. “Please use caution and avoid active work zones that may pop up.”

Purchased in 2006, the nearly 200-acre parcel is east of Pokagon State Park and Interstate 69. Trine SRA is accessible only from Feather Valley Road, one-half mile east of County Road 50 West. A property map is available at stateparks.IN.gov/2973.htm.

Upon entering Trine SRA, visitors should go to the welcome center to pay the normal park entrance fee of $5 per in-state vehicle or $7 per out-of-state vehicle or show their annual entrance permit. A daily entrance permit for Pokagon will also be valid for entry to Trine SRA.

Trine SRA was Wing Haven Resort from 1948 to 1972. It was Camp Calvary church camp and Oakhill Resort and Conference Center from 1972 until 2006.

The property was acquired through 101 Lakes Land Trust, ACRES Land Trust and The Nature Conservancy, and made possible through a major contribution from Steuben County residents Sheri and Ralph Trine.

A grand opening will be scheduled for next spring, once the 12 cabins are ready to open. After Nov. 2, 2013, the general public can reserve Swenson Lodge and Wild Turkey picnic shelter at camp.IN.gov, or 1-866-6CAMPIN (1-866-622-6746). For more information, call (260) 833-2012.

Pokagon State Park (stateparks.IN.gov/2973.htm) is at 450 Lane 100 Lake James, Angola, 46703.
