[s7] Aviation Association Names Sen. Hershman Legislator of the Year, Praises Industry Job Growth

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 11, 2013) The Aviation Association of Indiana (AAI) recently named State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Buck Creek) “Legislator of the Year.” The award recognizes his efforts on a new law that has generated dramatic gains in revenue and job creation in Indiana's aviation sector.

In the 2013 legislative session, Hershman sponsored House Enrolled Act 1545. This removed a 7-percent tax on aircraft parts and repairs as well as the state’s aviation fuel excise tax.

Hershman and the bill’s author, Rep. Eric Turner (R-Cicero), were nominated for the award. Andrea Montgomery, AAI president and vice president of Montgomery Aviation, thanked the legislators for their efforts in supporting Hoosier jobs.

“As a result of their efforts and many other members of the Indiana General Assembly, Indiana is no longer a flyover state,” Montgomery said. “The changes to the tax structure allow Indiana aviation businesses to compete on a level playing field with aviation businesses in other neighboring states.  I have talked to airports across the state that have noticed an increase in business as a result of the changes.  Simply put, these changes created Hoosier jobs and that is why we are honored to name them as our legislators of the year.”

Last month, two local aviation facilities – Eagle Creek Aviation Services and Hawker Beechcraft Services – credited the measure with new job growth and development within their businesses.

“We added a second shift,” said Matt Hagans, chief executive officer of Eagle Creek. “If this bill didn’t get passed, we were looking at shipping people down to our Florida operation. These jobs would have left the state.”

“I’m proud to say that at Hawker Beechcraft Services Indy, we’ve been able to add people to our staff due in part to this law,” said Marty Becker, facility sales manager for the company. He said the Indianapolis facility previously lost business because of the tax on repairs. “Now that is over, and we are pleased that our customers are no longer affected by this repair tax.”

Hershman said these trends emphasize the legislation’s goal – to create jobs and keep them in the state.

“With these advancements, more aviation business owners are confidently expanding their operations and hiring more Hoosiers,” Hershman said. “Because jobs and revenue generated in the community tend to stay in the community, it’s my belief this local growth will open new markets for further development.”
