[SUPREME] Campaign by Supreme Court, judges and lawyers seeks to make sure those in need have a lawyer in court
Start Date: 10/3/2013 All Day
End Date: 10/3/2013
Entry Description

The Indiana Supreme Court is announcing several statewide activities involving judges and lawyers working to make sure litigants are represented in court.  The initiative is part of October’s Pro Bono Month efforts.  Pro bono means legal services done at a free or reduced cost as a public service.

Chief Justice Brent E. Dickson will speak about the importance of pro bono services at the Indianapolis Bar Association luncheon on Thursday, October 10 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Hyatt in Indianapolis.  Registration is available at  During the event, Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations will premier a video highlighting pro bono work and opportunities.  After the premier, the video will be available on the Supreme Court’s YouTube channel at

Since 1852, pro bono has been a part of the Indiana Oath of Attorneys.  Under Rule 6.1 of the Rules of Professional Conduct, lawyers are strongly urged to provide legal services at no fee or a reduced fee to the economically disadvantaged.  The Rules of Professional Conduct also established the Indiana Pro Bono Commission to allow the Indiana Supreme Court and the Indiana Bar Foundation to work together to support pro bono programs.

Twelve pro bono districts (A-L) serve the state.  A map can be found online at  Each district coordinates pro bono opportunities such as face-to-face, over the phone, and online consultations with local attorneys, participating in family law clinics, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) training for lawyers.  Specific upcoming events include:
  • Statewide – The Guardian Ad Litem/Court Appointed Special Advocate Office, Youth Law T.E.A.M., and Indy Bar are offering a six hour CLE training (one hour ethics credit) for attorneys interested in serving as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) in delinquency cases.  The November 1 training is free to attorneys who agree to serve as a GAL on two cases.  The training will be held at the Indy Bar office and registration is available at
  • District A – NWI Volunteer Lawyers, Inc. is co-sponsoring the 4th Annual “Red Mass” on October 23 followed by a free breakfast and 1.5 hour CLE about “eDiscovery: Understanding the Ins and Outs of Electronically Stored Information – Its Production, Review, and Preservation.”  More information at
