Replacing Steel Beams on Virginia Ave. Bridges to Restrict Cultural Trail

INDIANAPOLIS – Milestone Contractors plans to begin next week replacing two steel beams on the Virginia Avenue bridges over Interstates 65 and 70 near the south split.

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail, which follows the south side of Virginia Avenue across the bridges over I-65/I-70, will be restricted in width beginning Monday for less than two weeks as the existing beams are removed and replaced. The sidewalk on the north side of the street will be closed and detoured to the south side of the street. Replacing both beams at the same time allows for faster completion and minimizes inconvenience to trail users.

Contractors have paved new concrete under the bridges that will serve as a foundation for temporary support jacks needed to remove and replace the steel beams. The beams are being replaced due to repeated strikes from oversize loads. In February, a crash fractured a beam in two locations and caused a weekend-long closure of the interstate for emergency repairs. Properties of the steel from the removed beams will be examined at Purdue University as part of the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP).

Through the JTRP, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Purdue University are using technology to track the project’s progress and traffic impacts. INDOT and Purdue previously attached a camera and accelerometer to a Virginia Avenue bridge beam, and the resulting video showed regular collisions from oversized vehicles on I-65/I-70 below.

New time lapse video shows contractors removing pavement, installing new drainage, stabilizing the roadbed soil, compacting 6 inches of stone base, paving 3 inches of asphalt base and 11 inches of new continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP). This required efficiently scheduling multiple crews in sequence to optimize time and resources and complete the work as quickly and as safely as possible. The video may be viewed on the INDOT YouTube channel at

Milestone is currently on or ahead of schedule to reopen I-65/I-70 within the 59 days bid for the project contract. INDOT is offering incentives of $60,000 per day to meet or beat the already aggressive schedule.

More photos and videos are posted to INDOT’s social media pages for East Central Indiana, which includes Indianapolis. Project posts are tagged with #SouthSplit on the Indiana Department of Transportation East Central Facebook page and on Twitter @INDOT_ECentral.
