Governor Cuts Ribbon on Hoosier Heartland between Lafayette and Delphi

New State Road 25 section opens to traffic late today

DELPHI, Ind. – Governor Mitch Daniels joined federal, state and local officials and members of the Hoosier Heartland Industrial Corridor, Inc. for a ribbon cutting ceremony today on a 12 mile stretch of State Road 25 (S.R. 25), the Hoosier Heartland between I-65 in Lafayette and US 421 in Delphi.

“Today is an exciting day for everyone who has waited for over 30 years to get this roadway built,” said Daniels. “The Hoosier Heartland corridor brings a world of possibilities for business expansion, new ventures and jobs to this area of Indiana.”

“Without the Governor’s Major Moves program we wouldn’t be standing here today,” said INDOT Crawfordsville District Deputy Commissioner Alan Plunkett.  “The $331 million investment in this entire project has put over one dozen prime contractors and all their employees to work building this roadway.”

Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski said, “The Hoosier Heartland corridor is an excellent example of what can happen when people work together.  The highway is an investment in transportation infrastructure that brings tremendous economic development opportunities.”

The new S.R. 25 will be a 36-mile, four lane, limited access divided highway between Lafayette and Logansport.  The project is divided into four segments, with the first stretch opening today.  The last three segments spanning from Delphi to Logansport should be open to traffic at the end of 2013.  The Hoosier Heartland corridor will provide greater and safer access from Lafayette to Fort Wayne, where it will link to the US 24 segment known as the Fort-to-Port corridor opening later this year.  When completed, central Indiana will have direct access to deep water shipping ports in Toledo.

The barricades will come down and the roadway will open late today.  Motorists need to pay special attention at all the county road intersections where traffic on S.R. 25 has the right-of-way.
