[r75] Bacon's Legislative Thoughts, All Hoosiers Can Own Their American Dream
Start Date: 10/4/2012Start Time: 12:00 AM
Entry Description
This week Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis) made an exciting announcement about our plans for the upcoming session. I have often spoken this summer about our communities’ need for technically trained and skilled workers and my work to help bridge the skills gap. This will continue to be one of my top priorities and I’m pleased to say will also be for my colleagues at the Statehouse in the upcoming session.

We have several plans to accomplish this goal that include improving career and technical education in our high schools, increasing and supporting dual credit programs, strengthening partnerships between industry and higher education leaders as well as targeting investments on training programs with high potential.

Recent reports show that 67 percent of manufacturing companies are reporting moderate to severe shortage of available, qualified workers. On top of that, 56 percent of those companies expect the shortage to increase in the next three years. Because of our strong fiscal stances for a balanced budget and creating an environment where employers want to be based, we have been graded as number one in the Midwest and number five in the nation to do business in. However, Indiana received C- on our ability to provide quality human capital based largely on several factors, including:
  • First year retention rates at community and technical colleges
  • The share of associates degrees awarded on a per capita basis
  • Eighth grade mathematics test scores
I know that we are capable of providing our students with the correct education and skills sets to improve this grade and to ensure they can be confident and successful in their careers.

In the upcoming session we will also be focusing on addressing crucial shortages of teachers who are educating our students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and science (STEM). Currently, there are 2.4 STEM jobs for every one unemployed person. We do not want our students to miss out on the opportunity to be successful in their career in this global economy. We cannot allow our students to fall behind in these crucial areas and I’m looking forward to finding solutions to address this issue.

I look forward to working together to accomplishing these goals and providing a brighter future for all Hoosiers and their families. Please contact me if you have any questions at 317-232-9647 or by email Thank you for your continued support.
