Entry Description Ball State University’s Department of Telecommunications has been selected to receive the 2012 Governor’s Award for Preservation of Historic Places.
The award was established in 2009 by the DNR Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology. The award annually recognizes outstanding grassroots efforts that result in the preservation and appreciation of Indiana’s cultural heritage.
This year’s award recognizes Ball State’s Department of Telecommunications for its project “Historic Muncie: Preserving Middletown’s Neighborhoods.” The project documents historic places and preservation efforts in Muncie through an interactive online museum at HistoricMuncie.org.
The project showcases historic buildings, neighborhoods and National Register Historic Districts in Muncie. A documentary includes interviews with residents of the historic districts and advocates for preservation. The website also features maps, histories and descriptions of architectural staples.
The project is a partnership involving the university, its students, community members and government agencies.
The award will be presented to representatives of Ball State on Nov. 7, at 1 p.m., at Cornerstone Center for the Arts, 520 E. Main St., Muncie.
