Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 10, 2012) — State Budget Committee members met at Purdue University in West Lafayette today, approving funding for multiple campus projects that State Sens. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) and Brandt Hershman (R-Buck Creek) said will give student buildings needed upgrades.

Today’s budget approval includes money for the installation of new fire alarm and sprinkler systems in the Stewart Center — a building that houses a humanities library, theaters and computer laboratories among other student resources. Approved funding will also bring electrical systems at the Zucrow Building Complex — part of the School of Mechanical Engineering — up to code.

“Hoosier students and families expect safe learning environments at top state institutions like Purdue,” Alting said. “These upgrades to the Stewart Center and Zucrow Building Complex are needed to ensure them that this is a top priority for school officials.”

In addition to the safety upgrades, the State Budget Committee approved the renovation of a Physics Building classroom that seats 115 students and the replacement of the Laboratory Materials Storage Building HVAC system. Hershman, a member of the committee, said these projects may seem minor but are necessary.

“Hoosiers interested in attending an Indiana college have numerous options,” Hershman said. “For Purdue to remain competitive, the university needs state-of-the-art facilities that offer new technology as well as ample lecture halls that can support a growing student body.”
