Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 2, 2012) — State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Buck Creek) has been named co-chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures’ (NCSL) Labor and Economic Development Committee, a group charged with presenting state employment concerns to Congress.

Hershman has served on the Labor and Economic Development Committee, one of 12 NCSL standing committees, since 2009. Its members examine state and federal issues related to labor, employment, workforce and economic development, international trade and cultural affairs. NCSL President Rep. Terie Norelli, Democratic leader of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, and President-Elect Sen. Bruce Starr, Republican leader of the Oregon Senate, made the recent appointment.

“Brandt Hershman brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to the table,” Norelli said. “I am pleased that he has accepted the appointment, and I look forward to his valuable contributions to state public policy over the next year.”

Hershman said his new position offers increased opportunities to ensure committee members are efficiently and effectively sharing ideas and concerns regarding the economy, not only with federal lawmakers and agencies but also with each other.

“Acting as an advocate for the best economic interests of state governments — including Indiana — during tough financial times is certainly a challenge,” Hershman said. “But it’s one I look forward to facing because of the opportunities it brings. As a state that’s recently been able to begin phasing out its inheritance tax and lower corporate tax rates while maintaining a balanced budget, Indiana has ideas and best practices that should be shared. Similarly, we should be ready to listen to what’s worked for other states.”

Hershman added that the key to fostering job growth at the state and national levels includes workforce education, low taxes and limited government regulations. Hershman also serves as a member of the Midwestern Legislative Conference Committee on Economic Development, the State Budget Committee and the Senate Committee on Appropriations. He chairs the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy.

NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves legislators and staffs of the nation’s 50 states, its commonwealths and territories. NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is a respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
