US 231 Safety Project Awarded to Gridlock

Crews will be working mainly at night to minimize the impact to traffic

 

MONTGOMERY/TIPPECANOE COUNTIES, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announce the US 231 edge and center line rumble strips project has been awarded to Gridlock Traffic Systems for $478,750.  The edge and center line rumble strips will be installed on US 231 from the two lane section of roadway north of I-74 in Montgomery County to the beginning of the four lane section of roadway in southern Tippecanoe County.  Professor Darcy Bullock and his colleagues in the Joint Transportation Research Program have collaborated with INDOT on the planning and preparation of this project.

 

Edge line rumble strips are very similar to shoulder rumble strips, but placed at the edge of the travel lane, typically in line with the edge line pavement marking.  Center line rumble strips are installed at or near the center line of an undivided roadway, and may be comprised of either a single or double line of rumbles.  These treatments are found to reduce run-off-road right crashes and cross center line crashes such as head-on collisions.

 

Rumble strips are intended to save lives and prevent serious injury by alerting drivers that they are leaving the driving lane.  They consist of raised or grooved patterns on the roadway.  They provide the driver with both an audible warning (rumbling sound) and a physical vibration.

 

Gridlock will be installing these during the evening hours to minimize the impact to traffic, working from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m.  Some daytime weekend work may occur.  Through the town of Linden and Romney the rumble strips will not be installed.  Construction should begin on or after next Tuesday, September 4 and be completed by October 31, 2012.
