Sens. Head, Merritt Promote Indiana Business Climate, Encourage Chinese Sister Province to Invest

Entry Description

State Sens. Randy Head (R-Logansport) and Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) met with Chinese delegates at the Statehouse today to promote economic-development opportunities with Indiana’s sister province, Zhejiang.

The effort is a continuation of this June’s trade mission, when Head traveled to China with Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and 35 other government, business and agriculture leaders. During that trip, Hoosier delegates commemorated Indiana’s 25-year relationship with Zhejiang by connecting with 40 Chinese employers looking to do business in Indiana, and Skillman signed an agreement to share agriculture- and rural-development practices.

“Today’s visit was Zhejiang leaders’ effort to reciprocate our summer trip to China,” Head said. “These meetings offer excellent forums for legislators like myself and Sen. Merritt to identify economic development and growth opportunities available between our state and our sister province. They allow us to build a relationship that, ultimately, will bring more jobs to Indiana.”

Head and Merritt honored the delegates with a proclamation recognizing Indiana and Zhejiang’s strong cultural and economic relationship. They noted that, as a result of the affiliation, Indiana exports to China have more than quadrupled since the beginning of the century, and China is now one of the top three foreign purchasers of Indiana-made automobile parts.

The senators also used the meeting to explain the process of how a bill becomes a law in the Indiana legislature.

“It’s important that Zhejiang leaders understand how Indiana lawmakers work to promote a business-friendly environment for employers,” Merritt said. “Explaining our legislative process and recent economic-growth policies will help expand trade relations that encourage Chinese businesses to invest here.”

Madame Qiao Chuanxiu, chairwoman of the Zhejiang Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), led the Chinese delegation.

“Many of our businesses have chosen the state of Indiana as their destination for expansion,” Qiao said. “The governments of the Zhejiang province and Indiana are confident about the relationship developing.”

Other delegates included Lou Guohua, director general of Zhejiang’s Forestry Department; Ye Ziting, deputy secretary-general of Zhejiang CPPCC; Li Huolin, director general of the Zhejiang CPPCC Research Office; Yu Yiping, deputy director-general of Zhejiang Foreign Affairs Department; Chen Yao, interpreter of the Zhejiang Foreign Affairs Department; Tong Jian, president of Zhejiang Publishing United Group; and Zhuang Liping, division chief of Zhejiang CPPCC.
