Entry Description
Sellersburg-On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina slammed into Biloxi, MS causing many deaths and total destruction. After the hurricane, the Indiana State Police sent over 100 troopers to Biloxi, MS to assist the citizens, patrolling the streets and neighborhoods and providing some very needed relief for the Biloxi Police Department so their officers could get their lives back together. Indiana State Troopers were given police powers in Mississippi as part of the Federal Disaster Declaration that was declared for the southern part of the United States after Hurricane Katrina struck.
Fast forward to March 2, 2012, tornadoes devastate southern Indiana and during the outbreak two troopers' homes were completely destroyed and two other troopers' homes and property sustained damage. These tornadoes gained national attention for their devastation. They caught the attention of Biloxi, MS police officers and they decided to help. The Biloxi Police Department held fundraisers and collected over $9,000.00 for the troopers who were affected.
Today, at the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg, Officer Mike Wheeler and Lieutenant Bruce Johnson of the Biloxi, MS Police Department brought a check and presented it to the Indiana State Police Alliance who will distribute the money to help the troopers affected by the tornadoes. |
