State Sen. Scott Schneider Statement on Marion County Property Reassessment Errors
Start Date: 10/16/2012Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 10/16/2012End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

State Sen. Scott Schneider (R-Indianapolis) made the following statement today regarding reports that many properties in Marion County were assigned assessed values that were too high due to a calculating error. Schneider this week called for an investigation of property-tax assessments in Marion County after learning about higher than normal assessment values from residents in Senate District 30.

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 16, 2012) – “After hearing concerns from local taxpayers that their property-tax assessments were skyrocketing, I wanted to involve the state legislature and Department of Local Government Finance in order to address the issue before property tax bills come out next spring.

“Moments after I had made the announcement that the Commission on State Tax and Financing Policy was going to examine the issue and the DLGF was going to review Marion County’s ratio study – which measures the accuracy and equity of assessments – the Marion County Assessor’s Office reported thousands of reassessment errors in the area.

“I want to thank local taxpayers for voicing their concerns and frustrations about the inflated assessments they were seeing. Property taxes are a very personal issue for homeowners and the assessor’s office must work hard to ensure these errors are corrected so accurate bills can be sent on time. I believe this is further evidence that the system needs to be examined more closely. Every homeowner deserves to be treated fairly and that means taking another look at the anomalies in Marion County.”
