[ATG] Zoeller will join FTC panel focusing on robocall laws and obstacles to enforcement
Start Date: 10/16/2012 All Day
End Date: 10/16/2012
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller will participate in a key panel during the upcoming Robocall Summit on Thursday hosted by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The FTC recently announced the agenda for the Washington D.C. summit which will feature experts in the fields of law enforcement, telemarketing and telecommunications. According to the FTC, participants will explore innovations designed to trace robocalls, prevent wrongdoers from faking caller ID data and stop unwanted calls.

Zoeller recently hosted a series of telephone privacy roundtable discussions across Indiana to find more effective ways to prevent Hoosiers from receiving unwanted calls and text messages.

“Indiana is not alone in the fight against unwanted robocalls and that’s why it’s important to share information with our federal partners and work on comprehensive solutions together,” Zoeller said. “I plan to take the ideas generated during our state’s roundtable discussions to the summit and bring back ways our state can be more effective against autodialers and the illegitimate businesses that profit from them.”

Zoeller will participate in a panel titled, “The Law: What is the law surrounding robocalls? How is it enforced? What are the limitations and challenges? What does all of this mean for consumers? Other participants in the panel will include Will Maxson, program manager for Do Not Call Enforcement with the FTC, and Eric Bash, associate chief at the Federal Communications Commission’s Enforcement Bureau. The moderator will be Lois Greisman, associate director of the FTC’s Division of Marketing Practices. In September, Maxson participated in Zoeller’s telephone privacy roundtable in Indianapolis.

Other sessions will focus on developing solutions to the problem of illegal robocalls, including panels on caller ID spoofing and call authentication, data mining and anomaly detection, and call-blocking.

Zoeller said he will continue to work with industry leaders and enforcement agencies to identify ways to better trace illegal calls, prosecute violators and combat caller ID spoofing or technology that allows scammers to disguise the source of the call.

Consumers who receive a robocall or who are on the Do Not Call list and receive a sales solicitation can file a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office by calling 1-888-834-9969 or by visiting
