[r32] ISMA awards Rep. Turner as Legislator of the Year

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – The Indiana State Medical Association (ISMA) awarded State Rep. Eric Turner (R-Cicero) with the Legislator of the Year Award. Rep. Turner, along with two other legislators, was presented the award during the ISMA’s annual convention which took place from Sept. 14-16 at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis.

The Legislator of the Year Award is presented to a legislator or legislators, who assist the ISMA in advocating in the best interests of patients during the previous legislative session. Rep. Turner received the award for his work as the prime author on the state smoking ban and phasing out of the inheritance tax.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award from ISMA,” said Rep. Turner. “I have worked hard with my colleagues to help pass legislation, like the smoking ban, which promotes a healthier work environment for employees while eliminating health risks for Hoosiers.”

"Similar to the smoking ban, the inheritance tax phase out is legislation I worked on, with many of my colleagues, for several years. Eliminating the inheritance tax allows small businesses, farmers, and hard-working Hoosiers, who have spent a lifetime saving, to pass on their resources to family, friends, or employees without the risk of additional state taxation.”

For over 160 years, ISMA is devoted to promoting sound health policies in the public, governmental and private sectors.  With approximately 7,900 physician members, ISMA has supported continued education for Indiana doctors.

“The smoke-free bill was a signature piece of legislation, and these three legislators were the architects to secure its passage,” said Mike Rinebold, director of the ISMA Government Relations. “All three legislators serve on health committees, so they are not new to issues that help protect patients and physicians.”
