Entry Description Celebrate fall with food, crafts and hands-on activities at Patoka Lake’s annual Autumn Getaway Weekend, Oct. 19-20.
All events take place at the modern campground in Newton Stewart State Recreation Area.
The weekend events are:
Friday
Friendship Stew, 7 p.m.
Visitors are encouraged to drop off canned vegetables two hours early at the shelterhouse so that park naturalists and volunteers can prepare the stew. Diners should bring lawn chairs, crackers, bowls and eating utensils.
Creatures of the Night, 7:30 p.m.
Join the naturalist around the campfire for this educational program, with a special live guest.
Saturday
Fall Family Fun, 9-11 a.m.
Visitors can take part in crafts, activities and games, including pumpkin carving, face painting, T-shirt tie-dying, a scavenger hunt and more.
Dutch oven demonstration, 11 a.m.
Dutch oven cook-off competition, 12:30-3 p.m. (sign-up starts at noon).
Participants will create a dish for judges. Public sampling is at 3:30 p.m. at Taste of Patoka.
Chainsaw carving demonstration, 1-3 p.m.
Campsite decorating contest, judging begins at 3 p.m.
Taste of Patoka, 3:30 p.m.
Visitors can sample dishes from the Dutch oven cook-off, as well as cast iron chili prepared by DNR staff and volunteers. Bring a bowl or plate, utensils and a $2 donation.
Pet parade, 5 p.m.
Pets must be on a leash. A costume contest will follow.
Trick or Treat, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
This event is for campers 12 and younger.
Trail of Tales hike with the naturalist, 7:30 p.m.
Winners announced for Dutch oven cook-off, pet costume, pumpkin carving and campsite decorating contests, 9 p.m.
