FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 24, 2012
State Road 46 Bridge expected to reopen in late October
Design plans completed for expedited repair contract
CLAY COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces that design plans have been completed for expedited repairs to the closed State Road 46 (S.R. 46) Bridge over the Eel River. Based upon the amount of repairs needed, INDOT’s construction engineers estimate the bridge can be safely reopened to traffic in late October of 2012.
Bids will be opened for the expedited repair contract on September 12, 2012. If awarded, the contract would allow construction to begin by the first of October.
The bridge on S.R. 46 was closed July 31 after structural engineers retained by INDOT recommended closing the bridge after identifying more corrosion in the structural steel than was previously documented. For the safety of the motoring public it was determined the bridge should be closed.
The detour follows S.R. 46 east to State Road 246 west to State Road 59 north and back to S.R. 46. Traffic traveling in the opposite direction will use the same detour in reverse.
