FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Weight Restriction placed on State Road 46 Bridge over Eel River
Vehicles over 16 tons need to seek alternate route
CLAY COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is advising motorists that a weight limit restriction of 16-tons has been placed on the State Road 46 (S.R. 46) Bridge over the Eel River in Clay County. Typically, cars, mini-vans and pickup trucks are under the 16 ton weight limit.
Based upon a recent inspection of the bridge, INDOT has determined that vehicles weighing 16-tons are not allowed to travel on this bridge. The conditions of the bridge have warranted placing this weight restriction on this bridge. Signs displaying “Weight Limit 16 Tons” are posted on both sides of the bridge and at the intersections of State Road 59 and S.R. 46, State Road 246 and S.R. 46, plus in Spencer at US 231 and S.R. 46.
The through truss bridge was originally built in 1933.
A repair contract is being developed and as soon as a timeline is known for construction it will be released.
INDOT reminds motorist to use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone. For the latest news and information about INDOT, please visit www.in.gov/indot .
