Arts Commission to announce grant awards at Statehouse multi-media event

(Indianapolis, Indiana)The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced today that it will utilize a multi-media presentation to highlight direct grants to Hoosier artists and cultural organizations, and the impact those grants have to all regions of the state.

The “Arts Day in the Big Tent” event February 2, 2017 in the Indiana Statehouse Rotunda is a partnership with Indianapolis-based media service Big Tent. Created by IUPUI faculty Robin Cox and Benjamin Smith, The Big Tent is a uniquely portable and immersive space designed for multi-media performance using the latest in audio and visual technologies. It exists to inspire the creative explorations of artists across many mediums of expression.

Together, the IAC and Big Tent will present a multi-media program featuring video and audio stories from Hoosier artists and cultural program providers who receive funding from the Arts Commission. The self-contained presentation will run as a continuous loop throughout the day.

“Who better to tell the stories of how the arts impact the lives of Hoosiers than those directly involved in performances and programs that reach people of all ages in all regions of our state,” said IAC Executive Director Lewis C. Ricci. “Our artists, arts organizations, and Regional Arts Partners are cultural ambassadors whose dedication to service will be highlighted in this presentation.”

During brief remarks, scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. (EST), the findings of the statewide economic and employment impact study, conducted by researchers from Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, will be shared with the public. The statewide research evolved from a regional study commissioned by Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne, the IAC’s Regional Arts Partner in northeast Indiana. Additional collaboration on the project was provided by the Indiana University Public Policy Institute.

“In this, the first statewide study of its kind, the research looked at both for-profit and non-profit arts organizations and cultural program providers, private businesses like Big Tent, and self-employed individuals,” Ricci said. “It is significant to note that the Creative Economy of Indiana employs more than 124,000 Hoosiers. A large percentage of those individuals are self-employed. Nationwide, 20 percent of Creative Occupations are self-employed, but in Indiana that rate is notably higher at 57 percent.”

The Indiana Arts Commission is dedicated to the vision of the arts everywhere, every day, for everyone in Indiana.
