[r85] Rep. Cox congratulates local family on long-standing farm
Start Date: 8/5/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 8/5/2014
Entry Description
STATEHOUSE- State Representative Casey Cox (R-Fort Wayne) congratulates the Salomon family from Allen County for receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. The awards were presented by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann in the Farm Bureau Building at the Indiana State Fair.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farming families that have owned and operated the same farm for 100 years or more. Centennial awards were given for 100 years of ownership, while sesquicentennial and bicentennial awards were given for 150 and 200 years of ownership respectively.

The Salomon Farm, located in Fort Wayne, has been in operation since 1862. The family received the Sesquicentennial award for over 150 years of ownership.

“Maintaining a family farm for over 150 years is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Rep. Cox. “Agriculture plays an unmistakably large role in the vitality of our state’s economy, and in order to maintain the success of this industry, we rely heavily on families like the Salomons.”

In 1976, the program was first established to acknowledge Indiana’s farming families that have made contributions to the economy, culture and the state’s overall advancement.

“Farming is more than an occupation; it is truly a way of life,” said Rep. Cox. “The Salomon family has preserved this way of life for over 150 years, and I pray they continue to find agricultural success for many years to come.”

Each year, two award ceremonies are held; one at the Statehouse in February and the other at the State Fair in August. For more information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program or to nominate a family for the award, visit />

Rep. Cox serves a portion of Allen County.
