Rep. Ober congratulates local family on farm preservation award

STATEHOUSE - State Representative Dave Ober (R-Albion) congratulates the Feightner Farm of Noble County for receiving the 2014 John Arnold Award for Rural Preservation. The award was presented by Indiana Landmarks and Indiana Farm Bureau during the Farmer’s Day Parade at the Indiana State Fair.

“I am pleased that the Feightner family is being recognized for all of their hard-work,” said Rep. Ober. “Not only have Mark and Donna carried on their family’s legacy as experts in the farming community, but it is because of families like these, that Indiana’s rich heritage and reputation as an agriculture state remain strong.”

In 1991, Mark and Donna Feightner took over the 125-acre Kendallville farm from his great aunt. Over the years, they have rehabilitated multiple buildings on the farm including the bank barn which dates back to 1910. To encourage similar rehabilitation efforts, the General Assembly passed legislation this past session to incentivize those who own heritage barns to restore them, much like the Feightner family.

Other additions to the farm were spurred by environmental concerns, which led the family to plant cover crops and filter strips in order to prevent soil erosion from leaking into Sackrider Lake and Gretzinger Ditch. For their environmental protection efforts, they received a River Friendly Farmer Award from the Noble County Soil and Water Conservation District.

“Mark and Donna have restored multiple buildings, while preserving their historical value, and found ways to protect against environmental concerns. Through their actions, the Feightner family is truly a leader in Indiana’s agricultural community, and we should all should be proud to have them as members of our community,” said Rep. Ober.

The Feightner’s next project is to restore the original late nineteenth-century homestead, which they recently occupied.
