[r74] Arnold Account: Celebrating summer in Southern Indiana
Start Date: 7/25/2014Start Time: 8:00 AM
Entry Description

Celebrating summer in Southern Indiana

Summertime is one of my favorite times of the year. With warmer weather, we can finally escape the house, explore the outdoors and try something new with the family. I love all there is to offer in Southern Indiana; everything from the peaceful rolling hills to the family friendly amusement park. While my family and I enjoy the occasional pool side barbeque, we love being active and adventurous as well.

That being said, I was humbled to be a part of Holiday World’s announcement to add the park’s first major steel roller coaster, Thunderbird. Known to be, “the nation’s first launched wing coaster,” this ride will take you from zero to 60mph in three and a half seconds and is expected to open next spring.

According to Holiday World, more than 1 million visitors have traveled to the park during recent summer seasons, and with this latest addition, I believe that number will only climb higher. I am looking forward to all those who will travel down to our district to check out the new ride and the rest of the park. You can watch Thunderbird’s construction progress by visiting www.holidayworld.com.

I recently learned about the Wine Over Water Concert Series at Blue Heron Winery in Cannelton as well. These concerts are free to the public and the music lasts from about 6 to 8 p.m CDT. They have food for purchase as well. Make sure to bring a lawn chair or blanket to fully enjoy the experience! For more information, please visit www.blueheronvines.com or call the winery at 812-547-7518.

While you’re at Blue Heron Winery, I encourage you to check out the Celtic Cross, sculpted by local artist, Greg Harris. After discovering that this sculpture took 23 months to carve, using only a stone, this piece of art became even more awe-inspiring.

My wife, four boys and I like to spend time hiking the rolling hills of our region. There are so many trails and kid-friendly activities at caves like Marengo. Marengo Cave is a U.S. National Landmark and has two tours available: a more novice trail, which lasts about 40 minutes, and one that lasts about an hour. Kids can mine for gems or even crawl through a cave simulator.

Closer to home, Wyandotte Caves, the pair of limestone caves just north of Leavenworth, still remain closed. I am working diligently to get these beautiful caves reopened. However, Bluespring Caverns and Squire Boone Caverns are open and nearby as well.

Ultimately, I hope you are having a safe and pleasant summer so far and enjoying all of the local attractions in our district. Southern Indiana is a great place to call home, especially with all our district has to offer. I hope to see you out and about in the district, and should you need anything in the meantime, please feel free to contact me at 1-800-382-9841.
