[DNR] Bird banding at Mounds SP, Aug. 16
Start Date: 8/16/2014Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Date: 8/16/2014End Time: 3:00 PM
Entry Description
Explore the science of bird banding with Wild Birds Unlimited chief naturalist John Schaust at Mounds State Park on Aug. 16.

The interactive demonstration is from 1 to 3 p.m. at the nature center.

Bird banding involves setting up fine nets to safely capture the birds. Schaust, a licensed bird bander, will remove the birds, study their characteristics, and affix a small numbered band to the bird. The band will serve as identification should the bird be captured again. Information such as age and migration patterns can be gained through bird banding.

The program is free after the standard entrance fee of $5 for in-state vehicles and $7 for out-of-state vehicles.

Mounds State Park (stateparks.IN.gov/2977.htm) is at 4306 Mounds Road, Anderson, 46017.
