[GOV] Governor Pence Shares Indiana’s Vision with National Workforce Development Leaders
Start Date: 7/29/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 7/29/2014
Entry Description

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today touted Indiana’s successes in advancing education and training opportunities for Hoosiers during the National Governors Association Joint Workforce Symposium of the National Association of State Workforce Board Chairs & Liaisons in Louisville, a four-day event aimed at bringing together workforce development leaders from across the nation to address workforce challenges of today.

“Indiana remains committed to having the best-trained and most-skilled workforce in the nation,” said Governor Pence. “Today’s event granted us the opportunity to showcase the work that is taking place each and every day within the Hoosier State to make this goal a reality.”

The Governor highlighted the Indiana General Assembly’s bipartisan and unanimous support to create the Indiana Career Council and Indiana Regional Works Councils, which are comprised of education and industry leaders committed to aligning learning with workplace needs.  The Career Council’s recently released strategic plan focuses on expanding business engagement; linking education, training and career pathways; and supporting the efforts of the Indiana Regional Works Councils which collaborate with business, industry, education and workforce professionals across the state.

Pence also cited the Indiana Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program as an extraordinary success. The state-based national non-profit organization is dedicated to reconnecting students academically by helping them overcome barriers to graduation. Shortly after the Governor took office in 2013, the Indiana General Assembly appropriated the first-ever state funding for JAG-Indiana.  The appropriation provides $6 million each year of this biennium and will allow for JAG-Indiana to grow from serving roughly 60 locations and 3,000 young people to 118 programs and more than 6,000 young people by the end of this year.

Following the keynote addresses, Symposium attendees visited Amatrol, Inc., a firm in Jeffersonville successfully integrating work-based learning with industry operations, to hear from a panel regarding the Indiana Regional Works Councils’ process and progress. The discussion took an in-depth look at how Indiana is addressing workforce issues via public-private educational partnerships and technical training options that invigorate Hoosiers’ learning experiences and pave the way for a more highly-skilled workforce in their respective communities. Members of the panel included Paul Perkins, President, Amatrol, Inc. and Region 10 Works Council Chair; Andy Melin, Superintendent, Greater Clark County Schools; Kent Lanum, President & CEO, Ogle Foundation and Region 10 Works Council appointee and was moderated by Jaclyn Dowd, Special Assistant to Governor Pence for Career Innovation.

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear also offered keynote remarks during the Symposium. This afternoon, Indiana Commission for Higher Education Commissioner Teresa Lubbers participated in a Pathways to Opportunity discussion highlighting Indiana’s efforts to increase post-secondary credential completion by 2025.
