[APPEALS] Appeals on Wheels makes 400th stop
Start Date: 6/16/2014 All Day
End Date: 6/16/2014
Entry Description
Signature outreach program highlights rule of law, judiciary’s role in government

INDIANAPOLIS – The Court of Appeals will conduct its 400th traveling oral argument on June 19 for an audience of high school juniors attending Hoosier Boys State at Trine University, Angola. A panel of Judges John G. Baker, Melissa S. May and Cale J. Bradford will hear Dodson v. Seven Corners Inc., a civil case on appeal from Marion Superior Court.
The court launched its traveling oral argument program, dubbed Appeals on Wheels, during its centennial anniversary year of 2000-2001. Since then, it has traveled across Indiana to high schools, colleges, law schools and other venues to give Hoosiers a close-up look at the court in action. Appeals on Wheels arguments also highlight the rule of law and the judiciary’s indispensable role in Indiana government.
“The entire court can be proud of this milestone,” Chief Judge Nancy H. Vaidik said. “We appreciate the tremendous interest of audiences across the state and the excellent advocacy of so many attorneys who’ve participated through the years.”
Appeals on Wheels is not a moot court program. All the arguments involve pending civil or criminal appeals from Indiana trial courts. Audiences receive a study guide about the court and case and copies of case briefs if requested. The court also provides a host-site checklist for easy preparation, sends a news release to area media and notifies the host site after the opinion is issued.
“Traveling oral arguments are just as focused on the case and the law as the rest of our caseload,” Vaidik said. “But they involve an added dimension of public outreach and education that benefits the court, the law and our audiences.”
Dodson v. Seven Corners Inc. will be the 20th Appeals on Wheels event this year.
