Crews to Begin I-69 Cable Barrier Installation

DELAWARE and GRANT COUNTIES – Contractors for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plan to begin next week installing nearly nine miles of new median cable barriers on Interstates 69.

Nationwide Construction is scheduled to begin installing the cable barriers Monday, June 16 at 8 a.m. Motorists should expect to see left shoulder restrictions and workers in the median of I-69 between State Road 28 in Delaware County and State Road 26 in Grant County. Work is scheduled to take place between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Always practice safe driving habits, especially in and around work zones. Follow speed limits, maintain safe distances from other vehicles and avoid distractions—especially cell phones.

Nationwide is also installing 18.6 miles of cable barrier on I-70 between State Road 103 (mile marker 126) in Henry County and Centerville Road (Exit 145) in Wayne County. Both installations are expected to be complete this year.

Over the next few years, INDOT plans to add median cable barriers on approximately 130 miles of interstates in various parts of the state. Since beginning a pilot program in 2005, Indiana has installed 370 miles of median cable barriers statewide. INDOT prioritizes installation in areas where crash history, traffic volumes, speed, median width and road geometry dictate the greatest need.

Cable barrier systems are lines of highly tensioned cables between anchored posts in the medians of roads. They are designed to control cross-median crashes, which produce half of all severe-outcome crashes and nearly two-thirds of fatal crashes nationwide. When applied correctly, cable barriers can be a cost-effective system to reduce the frequency and severity of cross-median collisions and save lives.
