[r72] Rep. Clere serves as MC and honors local senior citizen
Start Date: 5/30/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM

Entry Description
STATEHOUSE – Today, State Representative Ed Clere (R-New Albany) served as the master of ceremonies at the 2014 Golden Hoosier Awards in Indianapolis, where a Georgetown resident was honored.

The Golden Hoosier Award was established to recognize outstanding seniors for their lifetime of service to their community. Sponsored by Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann in collaboration with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, the Golden Hoosier Award is the highest honor bestowed on a senior citizen in Indiana.

The ideal recipient is an unsung hero who has not received previous recognition for the impact they have made in the lives of others and the community.

“In addition to providing invaluable service in their community, each of these Golden Hoosiers has set an example for others to follow,” Rep. Clere said.

Among the 19 honorees was Georgetown native and resident Edna Geswein. As a volunteer with the LifeSpan Resources Senior Nutrition/Meals on Wheels program, Geswein helped seniors receive nutritious meals for 18 years until her retirement from the program in March. Her responsibilities included packing both hot and cold food, checking route sheets, researching where the clients lived and delivering an ever-increasing number of meals to those in need.

Geswein also volunteered as secretary for Hobart Beach Post 1693 Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as treasurer of the Altar Society, Eucharistic minister and usher at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Albany. In addition, she hosted seven high school exchange students. Geswein was nominated by Lucy Koesters, nutrition and senior center director for LifeSpan Resources, which is located in New Albany and serves Clark, Floyd, Harrison and Scott counties.

Rep. Clere commented that it was the second day in a row he had helped honor Geswein. The day before, Rep. Clere presented Geswein with a medal in the LifeSpan Resources Senior Games Dance Contest, which was held in Jeffersonville.

“She’s a great example of an active senior who has taken time to give back to our community,” Rep. Clere said. “As for her award streak, with the senior games continuing tomorrow, I wouldn’t be surprised if she makes it three in a row.”
