[ISP] Missing Funds Lead to Arrest of Former Teacher
Start Date: 4/23/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/23/2014
Entry Description
Parke County—Detectives from the Indiana State Police Putnamville District have a arrested a former 6th grade teacher from Montezuma Elementary School on various felony counts related to alleged missing monetary funds. Detectives were made aware of the allegations on January 7th of this year by the attorney for Southwest Parke Community School Corporation.

Arrested: Melissa A. McMullen, age 38, of Rosedale, IN.
Charges: One Count of Forgery
Four Counts of Theft
Parke County Jail with bond set at $15,000

Ms. McMullen, in response to a Parke Circuit Court warrant, surrendered herself to the Parke County Jail around 10:00 this morning.

During the nearly four month long investigation, Indiana State Police Detective Brian Maudlin developed information alleging that while Ms. McMullen was in charge of fundraising events for the sixth grade class at Montezuma Elementary School, she utilized $2,533.32 of those monies for personal use from September 2013 through December 2013. The money originated from four separate fundraising events in that time period. Also, between September 2011 and December 2013 and while serving as the former president of the Southwest Parke Education Association, Ms. McMullen is alleged to have utilized $75,251.86 of those funds for personal use. The Southwest Parke Education Association account accepts dues from the individual corporation teachers and then Ms. McMullen, acting as the former education association president, was to forward those funds to the Indiana State Teachers Association. Instead, McMullen used some of those funds for personal use. McMullen, through her attorney, has since reimbursed the SWPEA the $75,251.86.

Assisting ISP Detective Brian Maudlin was the Parke County Prosecutor’s Office and the Finance and Accounting Division of the Indiana State Teachers Association.
