Entry Description

The invitation below has been sent to school administrators throughout the seven county Indiana State Police Indianapolis District. Local media is invited to attend this training along with local law enforcement, fire, EMS, and EMA officials.

Dear School Superintendent/Director/Administrator,

The Indiana State Police has been tasked to serve as the lead agency in coordinating active shooter training with local school corporations throughout the entire state. Indiana State Police Superintendent, Douglas Carter with the highest support of Governor Mike Pence, has initiated an active shooter training program for school administrators. One of Superintendent Carter’s and Governor Pence’s highest priorities, after they took office, was to ensure that every effort was made to provide the safest possible environment for all of the children in the State of Indiana.

A coordinated effort was launched early on with the Department of Education to create and implement a statewide training program that would involve all parties responsible for the care and safety of our children. This program has come to be known as the “Safe Schools/Active Shooter” program. Dr. Rich Hogue of the Department of Education has been assigned as a liaison with the Indiana State Police to assist in this endeavor.

The purpose of this program is to educate school administrative personnel on proper response to an active shooter situation, how law enforcement responds to active shooter situations, and what school personnel can do to mitigate injury and the loss of life in an active shooter situation. This presentation should last no more than two hours.

Troopers from the Indianapolis District of the Indiana State Police will be making this presentation at the below location and you are encouraged to attend. The date, time, and location are as follows:

Tuesday April 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Wyandotte Elementary School located at 3575 East 79th Street, Indianapolis IN. Please arrive by 9:45 a.m. if you would like to conduct interviews prior to the beginning of training.

We encourage you to invite the following members of your staff: assistant superintendents, principals/assistant principals, and school resource officers/school safety specialists. In addition, local law enforcement (city police and county sheriffs), fire, EMS, and county emergency management personnel, along with local media are also encouraged to attend.
