[R67] Remembering those who defend our freedom
Start Date: 4/11/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/11/2014
Entry Description

When we send out our pre-session surveys each year, they generally show that Hoosiers are concerned with issues such as jobs and education, and rightfully so. While veteran’s issues may not immediately come to mind as a pressing concern, many people would probably agree that as state legislators, we should also be cognizant of the treatment and well-being of our veterans.

This session, I supported legislation which would provide much-deserved help to veterans and their families. Senate Enrolled Act 352 removes the limit of three years that families of veterans are eligible to receive support from the Military Family Relief Fund (MFRF).

Those who have never received support from the fund will be given preference, and the Indiana Veterans’ Affairs Commission is required to set a maximum amount that can be given each year. The MFRF has a balance of more than $7 million, and lifting the cap will ensure those funds are available to support Hoosier veterans and their families who may need help with food, housing, utilities, medical services, transportation and other essential family expenses. This extends more help to military families, while still retaining Indiana’s strong fiscal integrity.

I also supported legislation to establish the Hoosier Women Veterans Program. Indiana is currently one of just a few states that do not have a women veterans program. As more and more women join the military, I believe this initiative is needed here in Indiana.

In December, I had the privilege of honoring Vevay native, Private Kassandra Woodward for being one of 13 women to ever graduate from the Marine Corps’ Infantry Program. While women such as Kassandra make the same personal sacrifices to defend our freedom, women veterans have unique needs that often differ greatly from their male counterparts. Many of these women do not know the programs and benefits that they are entitled to after returning home, and this new program, created specifically for them, will help them get access to those programs and benefits.

While I believe these are excellent ways for the state of Indiana to say thank you to our veterans, we must not underestimate the power of the words “thank you” as well. If you are not familiar, there is currently a letter writing campaign for veterans participating in Indy Honor Flight. This is a program created solely to honor America’s veterans and allows them to fly to Washington D.C. to see those memorials dedicated to their service.

If you are interested in participating, you can send store-bought cards, handwritten letters or pictures drawn by children. The salutation on each item should be “Dear Veteran” and should not be dated. Once completed, you can mail these special letters to:

Indy Honor Flight
ATTN: Mail Call
9093 S. SR 39
Mooresville, IN 46158

All letters must be received by May 2nd in order for veterans to receive them in time for the May 10th Honor Flight. Over the next couple of weeks, I plan to share this message across the district and also with my friends and family. I know the happiness it brings me to see a handmade drawing from one of my grandchildren, but I cannot imagine the immense joy it would bring to our veterans to receive hundreds of thank you cards from Hoosiers of all ages. I encourage everyone to participate, and thank you in advance for honoring our hometown Hoosier heroes.
