[DCS] Cass County DCS Recruiting Foster Parents: Informational Meetings set during Child Abuse Prevention Month
Start Date: 3/31/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/31/2014
Entry Description

LOGANSPORT, Ind. (March 31, 2014)—The Cass County office of the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) is always looking for adults with a strong desire to invest in the future. These potential foster parents are selfless caregivers willing to provide temporary supervision and stability for children during a challenging time in the children’s lives. Since April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Cass County DCS office has scheduled three informational meetings for prospective foster parents on Saturday, April 12 in Logansport.

“When it is unsafe for a child to stay in their own home, we always look for a fit and willing relative to care for the child,” said Mary Werner, DCS regional foster care specialist supervisor. “When a relative is unavailable, we need local foster families ready and willing to provide temporary care for our children in need. Having local foster families allows children to remain in their local community and remain in their school.”

Foster parents can be stay-at-home parents or they can work outside the home. They may rent or own their own house, apartment or condominium, as long as it meets safety standards. Besides providing food and shelter, they assist with practical needs like helping with visits with the child’s family, taking them to any needed therapy sessions, medical and other appointments and ensuring there are extra-curricular activities.

Local foster parents are especially needed so school-age children removed from their homes can continue to attend their own school and maintain contact with their friends. Those willing to foster teenagers or sibling groups are particularly desired.

Each informational meeting will be led by foster care specialists from the Cass County DCS office. Foster parent responsibilities will be discussed as well as the licensing process, including the home study. In addition, a licensed foster parent will be on hand to answer questions. A willingness to step up and help a child in need is the most important prerequisite for becoming a foster parent.

The April 12 informational meetings will take place at the Cass County DCS office, 301 East Broadway, Suite 300, in Logansport (3rd floor). Thirty-minute meetings will begin at 10 am, 10:45 am and 11:30 am.

To help increase awareness about child abuse prevention during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Cass County DCS office is coordinating a special Pinwheels for Prevention event April 8. The event will focus on some of the good things Cass County does to promote healthy child development as well as reflecting on the work that remains. It will begin at 7 pm at Little Turtle Waterway, 401 E. Melbourne Av. in Logansport.

There are more than 4,700 abused or neglected Hoosier children currently living in non-relative foster homes because it is unsafe for them to live in their own homes. In Cass County, 28 abused or neglected children live in foster homes.
