[ISP] Two Arrested for Stealing Copper Wire on I-69
Start Date: 3/25/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/25/2014
Entry Description
(Auburn, IN)-Two men from northwest Indiana were arrested late last night for allegedly stealing copper wire from light poles owned by the Indiana Department of Transportation on I-69 at the State Road 8 interchange in DeKalb County.

According to Indiana State Police Detective Clint Hetrick, he and First Sergeant Mark Carunchia were following up on a lead into a rash of copper wire thefts in and around the Fort Wayne area. As a result of their investigation, they were in the area of I-69 and State Road 8 at approximately 10:40 p.m. when they observed a pair of men walking from the interchange to their Ford pickup truck which had been parked in the Home Depot parking lot. As the truck pulled onto the exit ramp from State Road 8 to southbound I-69, it stopped and both men exited and loaded something from the shoulder area of the roadway into the bed.

Troopers Jake Quick and Chris Levitt pulled up behind the truck a few miles later after it had stopped on its own on the shoulder of the exit ramp southbound on I-69 at County Road 11A (exit 326). After making contact with the two men, the Troopers observed 10 rolls of insulated copper wire in the bed of the truck along with wire cutters in one of the driver’s pant pockets. Carunchia had checked the light poles at the interchange and found that the wire had been cut and removed from four of them. The estimated value of the wire is between $2000-$3000.

The driver, Ryan S. Self, 29 from Chesterton and the passenger, Jerone Dunams, 36 from Gary were both taken into custody without incident and incarcerated in the DeKalb County Jail on the following preliminary charge:

• Theft, Class C Felony
