[ISP] Portable Scales in Full Spring for Overweight Violations
Start Date: 3/18/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/18/2014
Entry Description

Porter County-Overweight semi’s cause damage to Hoosier roadways. Trucks that are overweight cause extra damage to the road surface and are a contributing factor to the formation of pot holes. Overweight trucks can cause significant damage especially this time of year.

Trooper Nedal Nabhan assigned to the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) nabbed two more overweight semis within the last four days operating for the same company out of Michigan.

Today, Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at approximately 9:57 a.m., he observed a 2005 Kenworth semi pulling a loaded flat bed with two steel coils on US 20 east bound near Old Hobart Road in Portage. The trailer appeared to be overweight based on the tires looking “pinched” low in air. Nabhan stopped the semi and conducted a commercial vehicle inspection. The semi/flat bed was weighed with portable scales with the assistance of Troopers Tom Devries and Tim Grayson. Troopers who are assigned to CVED have portable scales that they carry with them inside their police car.

The load weighed in at 133,350 lbs, overweight by 53,350 lbs of an allowed 80,000 lbs and was operating without a permit at the time of the traffic stop. It also had numerous load securement violations.

The driver, Brian D. Dykhouse, 60 of Gary, Indiana, was cited for an overweight and log book violations. He was also placed out of service and the Kenworth/flat bed was impounded for being overweight. The semi was owned by Haddad International Transport Incorporated out of Dearborn, Michigan.

A second semi/flat bed owned by Haddad International was stopped by Trooper Nabhan on Friday, March 14, 2014 and was also overweight. The 2003 Western Star semi, driven by Carl M. Devault, 62 of Whitehouse, Ohio was also loaded with steel coils. His load was overweight by 49,100 lbs, weighing in at 129,100 lbs of an allowed 80,000 lbs. This load was operating without a permit.

Devault was cited for being overweight and had numerous log book violations. The Western Star semi/flat bed was also impounded.
