[ISP] Traffic Stop Yields Stolen Handgun and Drugs
Start Date: 3/11/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/11/2014
Entry Description
Vigo County—Last evening at 9:21, Indiana State Police Trooper Mike Finney stopped a maroon 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix for 50 miles-per-hour in a 40mph zone northbound on 3rd Street near Farrington Street in Terre Haute. The driver was identified as David Keith Rudisel of Terre Haute. A routine check of his driving record revealed Rudisel did not have a valid driver’s license. His front seat passenger was identified as Ashlee Marie Melvin of Terre Haute. A routine check of Melvin revealed an active warrant for Criminal Conversion out of Terre Haute City Court. Rudisel consented to a search of his vehicle and at the request of Trooper Finney, Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputy Kris Morris arrived with his K-9 partner “ Blitz”. “Blitz” displayed common indicators for illegal drugs in the vehicle, so Trooper Finney searched a backpack found in the back seat. Inside the backpack were a loaded black .45 caliber Kimber handgun, a fake Barbasol shaving cream can with approximately (10) grams of suspected marijuana and (7) small perpherated squares of paper believed to be a controlled substance. The squares of paper were sent to the ISP laboratory for analysis and the Kimber handgun was found to have been reported stolen from a Vigo County Reserve Deputy’s vehicle on January 10, 2013. Rudisel and Melvin were incarcerated in the Vigo County Jail.

Arrested: David Keith Rudisel, age 31, Terre Haute, IN.
Charges: Receiving Stolen Property (felony); Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Handgun
without a License, both misdemeanors.

Arrested: Ashlee Marie Melvin, age 30, Terre Haute, IN.

The case was investigated by ISP Trooper Mike Finney. Assisting were ISP Trooper David Petrowski and Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputy Kris Morris and K-9 “Blitz”.
