[r68] 930 area code added to southern Indiana
Start Date: 3/1/2014 All Day
End Date: 3/1/2014
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – On Saturday, the 930 area code will be added to southern Indiana, a portion of which is represented by State Representative Jud McMillin (R-Brookville). The Indiana Officer of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC), the organization in charge of implementing the change, has provided a six month timeframe to help southern Indiana residents adjust to the changes.

“The 930 area code needs to be added since the numbers available to consumers are expected to run out in 2015,” said Rep. McMillin. “Residents of southern Indiana have always used the 812 area code, so with the addition of 930, I encourage everyone in our community to understand what those changes are, how they will be implemented and when they will go into effect.”

According to the OUCC’s website, consumers have six months before any changes will take place. During that transitional phase, consumers can make local calls without dialing the area code like normal. However, on Sept. 6, consumers dialing a local number will have to dial ten digits (area code + number) to make a local call.

Additionally, consumers that already have an 812 landline, wireless or business phone number will keep that number and no changes will be taking place to three-digit services like 911 or 411.

“Most portions of state and nation have required additional area codes to keep up with the rate at businesses and communities expand,” said Rep. McMillin. “If anyone is concerned about these changes, I encourage you to visit the OUCC’s website which is an excellent resource to help guide Indiana through these changes.”
