Rep. Lehe clarifies dairy product guidelines

Entry Description
STATEHOUSE – House Bill (HB) 1300 authored by State Representative Don Lehe (R-Brookston) passed out of the Senate and will now come back to the House for concurrence.

HB 1300 addresses a variety of dairy product guidelines in the Indiana Code including allowing certain notices about animal health, animal products, milk products and livestock brands to be sent by general mail instead of registered or certified mail. It also provides that a milk hauler/sampler permit will expire two years after the most recent inspection, specifies when certain milk samples must be collected and changes the protocols, procedures and penalties that may be used to prevent drug residue violations.

“These changes benefit both Hoosier families and farmers,” said Rep. Lehe. “Our current law is a mix of policies that are more stringent than federal law, unclear, outdated or burdensome. Increasing efficiency and effectiveness will help the dairy industry run more smoothly and will foster continued growth of Hoosier agribusiness, the backbone of our economy.”

The Senate added language to provide that the Creamery Examining Board may refuse to issue or reissue a milk tester’s license or milk sampler’s license to someone who has a prior suspension or revocation of either license and gives the Creamery License Division more control over milk and cream records.
