[ISP] Indiana State Police Chemist Honored for 40 Years of Service

Entry Description
The Indiana State Police recently recognized the Section Commander of the Microanalysis and Drug Units of the Laboratory Division for 40 years of dedicated service to the department and the citizens of Indiana. Forensic Scientists Fred Huttsell was presented with a 40 year certificate which signifies his years of service by Superintendent Doug Carter.

Huttsell graduated from Southwestern High School in Jefferson County, Indiana in 1966. He attended Purdue University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1970 and a Master of Science degree in 1972.

January 3rd, 1974 Huttsell began his Indiana State Police career as a Chemist II assigned to the Laboratory Section of the Investigations Division. During his career he has worked in three ISP laboratory locations in Indianapolis. The State Office Building, downtown Indianapolis, District 52 Regional Laboratory at 21st Street and Post Road and the Forensic & Health Laboratory on West 16th Street.

July 1998 Huttsell was promoted to South Zone Drug Unit Supervisor as a Chemist Supervisor IV until 2000 when he was reclassified as Forensic Scientist E7. In October 2006 he was promoted to Chemistry Section Supervisor as a Forensic Scientist E6, supervising 25 forensic scientists in the Drug and Microanalysis Units.

Huttsell has served as the Indianapolis Laboratory Safety Officer and the Laboratory Division Chemical Hygiene Officer developing the Laboratory Division’s safety program. In 2002, he initiated and developed a Marijuana Leaf Identification program to train local and county police officers to identify marijuana and give court testimony as experts.

Huttsell serves many professional organizations including, American Chemical Society, Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientists, Clandestine Laboratory Investigating Chemist Association and Association of Forensic Quality Assurance Managers.

Mr. Huttsell lives in Indianapolis with his wife Linda. They have one daughter and two grandchildren.
