Clipper System Crossing Indiana, Dumping Snow Saturday

Motorists Encouraged to Plan Travel Around Snowfall

INDIANAPOLIS – A fast-moving Alberta clipper is expected to move across the state Saturday, moving from northwest to southeast and dropping inches of snow in a short amount of time.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) encourages motorists to be aware of developing forecasts and plan travel around the winter weather. With the heavy rates of snowfall associated with clipper systems, motorists should expect snow to accumulate on roadways as INDOT trucks plow and treat an entire route. In addition to the rate of snowfall, cold temperatures and blowing winds could quickly decrease visibility and make driving conditions difficult.

If driving in inclement weather, slow down and adjust behaviors to the conditions encountered on the road. Crashes, slide offs and traffic backups prevent INDOT trucks from plowing and treating routes on a regular schedule of every 2-3 hours, and jeopardize the safety of other motorists.

Crews will begin patrolling ahead of the storm, and will plow and treat interstates, U.S. highways and state routes as needed once the snow begins, working in alternating 12-hour shifts as long as necessary to ensure roadway conditions remain as safe as possible during winter weather.

Always give snow plows room to safely do their work, don’t follow too closely, and brake early and slowly. For more tips on safe driving in winter weather, visit

The Indiana State Police and other law enforcement agencies encourage the public to keep its phone lines open for emergencies and to access road conditions at or by calling 1-800-261-ROAD (7623).

Updates from INDOT will also be posted on Facebook at Indiana Department of Transportation:  East Central and on Twitter @INDOT_ECentral.
