[ISP] Driver Not Watching for Potholes Hits Patcher
Start Date: 1/15/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/15/2014
Entry Description

Porter County-A driver not paying attention and following too closely hit the rear of an Indiana Department of Transportation INDOT truck who was following a crew patching potholes.

Preliminary investigation by Master Trooper David Miller revealed that at approximately 11:30 a.m., this Wednesday, January 15, 2014, morning a 1997 Mercury Villager van, driven by Stephanie Davidson, 33 of Chesterton was south bound in the left lane of State Road 49 near County Road 1100 North when a large vehicle in front of her made an abrupt change to the right lane. Davidson then noticed that there were three INDOT trucks in the left lane, one following after the other, with the last truck equipped with an arrow board and an impact attenuator, patching potholes. Davidson tried to go the right but her Mercury hit the impact attenuator. The 2013 INDOT Freightliner dump truck, driven by Richard Lee, 58 of Michigan City was not damaged. The impact attenuator sustained approximately $6,000 in damage. Davidson’s Mercury sustained approximately $5,000 in damage and had to be towed.

Davidson, Lee and no INDOT workers were injured.

Indiana State Police and INDOT would like to stress that motorists need to be aware of crews patching potholes on interstates, U.S. highways, and state routes. The rise and fall of temperatures following last week’s severe weather has caused potholes to form quickly. INDOT crews have been working since then to fill potholes throughout the Northwest Indiana District.

We would urge motorists to slow down and stay alert when encountering patching/maintenance crews.
