[ISP] Peru District Troopers Respond to 85 Calls in 36 Hours
Start Date: 1/6/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/6/2014
Entry Description
Peru – From 12:00 a.m. Sunday until noon today, troopers working from the Indiana State Police Peru Post have investigated or assisted other agencies with 12 crashes. Five of those crashes resulted in injuries. One of the crashes, on U.S. 31 in Tipton County, was an overturned semi-tractor pulling a tanker trailer containing hazardous material. The hazardous material created the risk of a possible explosion if the material came into contact with water. A coordinated effort with local emergency responders prevented anyone from being injured in the incident.

Troopers also assisted 34 motorists whose vehicles had slid off the travel portion of the roadway. The main cause for a majority of the crashes and slide offs was motorists traveling too fast for the snow covered roads. When roads become wet or are covered with snow or ice motorists should reduce the speed of their vehicles.

Officers also completed 31 calls to assist motorists. Assisting a motorist includes changing a flat tire, calling a wrecker for a disabled vehicle, or transporting stranded drivers and passengers to a warm building.

Officers also responded to eight routine calls for service. These calls included responding to a building fire, a burglar alarm, and welfare checks on snow bound residents.

The Indiana State Police Peru District is comprised of Cass, Fulton, Grant, Howard, Miami, Tipton and Wabash Counties.

Combination of treacherously low temperatures and blowing snow has created very dangerous driving conditions. This combination can cause visibility to be reduced and road conditions to change quickly. Essential travel only is recommended. If your vehicle or the vehicle of a fellow traveler becomes disabled, call 911. With the swift winds and low temperatures this can quickly become a life threatening situation.

For up-to-date road and weather information, citizens are encouraged to tune to local television and/or radio stations. Another source of information is the National Weather Service; this link will take visitors directly to the current Indiana weather information. Citizens may also contact the Indiana Department of Transportation Road and Weather line at (800) 261-7623 or visit the Indiana Department of Transportation website at

PLEASE, do not call city, county, or state police dispatch centers for road and weather updates. These lines need to be kept open for emergency.
