[ISP] Semi Loses Control, Goes Over Concrete Barrier Wall
Start Date: 1/8/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/8/2014
Entry Description

Porter County-A semi going too fast for road conditions lost control on I-94 this morning and wrapped his semi around an informational sign structure that spans the interstate.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper John Holmen revealed that at approximately 10:48 a.m. this Wednesday, January 8, 2014, morning a 2010 Freightliner pulling a box trailer, owned by J.B. Hunt out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and driven by Marvin Cook, 56 of Flint, Michigan was west bound on I-94 at the 22 mile marker (this is just west of the Burns Harbor/Porter exit) when he lost control of his semi. Cook was in the center lane when traffic up ahead was slowing down/stopping for a crash that had occurred earlier. Cook couldn’t slow down/stop and lost control of his semi, jack-knifed to the left and hit the concrete barrier wall. The tractor jumped over the barrier wall with part of the trailer on top of the barrier wall wrapping around the informational sign structure that is situated there. This structure holds up the informational sign that spans across I-94 east bound. After hitting the structure the hood of the tractor flew off into the east bound lanes and hit a 1998 Honda Accord, driven by Megan Parde, 23 of Schofield, Wisconsin that was in the right lane.

Parde and Cook were not injured.

The Freightliner was loaded with 25,000 pounds of food headed to Meijer’s. No load was lost and a supervisor from the Department of Transportation arrived at the scene and deemed the informational sign structure safe.

Both left lanes east bound and west bound were closed for removal of the semi and clean up of the diesel fuel that was lost after the semi crashed.

Cook was cited for Speed too Fast for Road Conditions and a log book violation. The roads at the time of the crash were still icy and snow packed in areas.
