[ISP] Traffic Crash Slows Traffic on I-65
Start Date: 1/3/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/3/2014
Entry Description
Indianapolis, IN- A three semi-tractor trailer and SUV crash late this morning on I-65 caused traffic to be snarled and forced motorists to be detoured to I-465.

Late this morning at 11:37 a.m., troopers were dispatched to the report of a personal injury crash on SB I-65 at the 104.4 mm. Trooper Justin Hobbs said a semi-tractor tanker was SB on I-65 when traffic begin to slow in front of him. SB I-65 is three lanes in this area, however due to road construction; concrete barriers have been placed on the right side fog line as the road does not have a shoulder.

Hobbs said the semi-tractor tanker struck the rear of a Jeep Commando SUV and drove the Jeep into the rear of a UPS semi-tractor pulling two trailers.

The first semi-tractor tanker continued and clipped the rear of another semi-tractor trailer.

The driver of the Jeep, Lisa Lively, 49, of Terre Haute, and her two passengers Miranda Lively, 21, and Megan Fisher, 22, were transported to Methodist Hospital with non life threatening injuries. The driver of the UPS truck, Ronald Blessinger, 55, of Cicero, was also transported to Methodist for complaint of pain. The driver of the semi-tanker was not injured.

Trooper Hobbs said the crash disabled the semis and the SUV which greatly increased the traffic congestion as workers were unable to move the wreckage from the roadway until the wrecker’s arrival.
I-65 SB was closed for approximately an hour as emergency workers gathered evidence and cleared the wreckage. During this time I-65 SB traffic was diverted onto I-465 and I-465 traffic was not allowed to go south on I-65.

Trooper Hobbs said traffic was heavy, but a crash could probably been avoided had drivers allowed a safe following distance and adjusted their speeds to traffic conditions.
